Background of Science Museum
On the occasion of the 60th Birthday Anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit in 1992, the Thai government realized her royal grace to the Thai citizens and the nation, especially her leadership and hard effort to utilize science and technology to develop better quality of life and careers in rural areas, natural resource and environment restoration as well as conservation of Thai arts and crafts and culture of rural regions. Her determination has awaken the rising interest on scientific and technological R&D for better quality of life and vigorous economic development. In the year 1992, the government, in honour of Her Majesty the queen, then initiated a project of “Science Museum”, and in the year 1995, the government gave its official approval in establishing the National Science Museum (NSM) as a state enterprise in Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (Ministry of Science and Technology later) to execute and manage the National Science Museum.

NSM developed “Science Museum” as the first starting museum located in Technopolis, Tumbon Klong 5, Amphoe Klong Luang, Pathumthani Province. In the year 2000, Her Majesty the Queen also kindly gave the name of the Science Museum’s building as “ Maha Rajinee Science Museum Building” on May, 25th and gave her favor to assign H.R.H the Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn presided over the building on June, 8, 2000. The Science Museum then opened officially for its services on June 9, 2000.

Design concept and construction of the Science Museum
“Maha Rajinee Science Museum” building was designed with a modern attractive architectural concept and latest image of museum in Thailand to reflect the advancement of science and technology. The architectural designer team led by Mr.Chalermchai Hornark (Deputy Governor of Thailand Institute of Scientific and Technological Research at that time) created a new stunning architectural building with geometry shapes of engineering structure. The building was constructed using sharp angels of cubic to be its foundation and balancing of 3 cube shapes leaning each other with only bearing foundation in 3 points, and each point weights 4,200 tons.
The height of the building was 45 meters. The structure of building built with Epoxy coated for corrosion prevention of steel structure. The 5 storey of building were built with reinforced concrete which be able to bear the weight of 500 kilograms per square meter, and air resistance of 120 kilograms per square meter. Its walls were built from durable ceramic steel without painting in long life, but being thermal insulation to better energy saving and temperature control.
